The Community Clean Air Ambassador Pilot Program (CCAAP) | Indoor Air Quality Awareness Project
Funded by Public Health - Seattle & King County (PHSKC) & The National Association of County Health Officials (NACHHO)
This project originated from public health officials’ recognition of the ongoing need for air quality awareness, particularly among communities most impacted by climate change and other social determinants of health. Through this design collaboration, we aimed to educate these communities about the importance of indoor air quality (IAQ) by developing an educational material to accompany in-person trainings. This material would help raise awareness and promote strategies for improving IAQ, enhancing community health and well-being.
Targeting King County households, the initiative focused on social, racial, health, and environmental equity, empowering individuals to learn about IAQ solutions. Key achievements included creating a piece that would be interactive and kid-friendly; a material that parents and community members could utilize the visuals to clearly articulate practical solutions around IAQ. The final concept that was decided on was a folded house model, similar to advent calendar posters, with actionable strategies to address the causes of poor air quality and remedies.
Partnerships with organizations like the Chinese Information and Services Center (CISC) and Mother Africa facilitated a co-creation process involving community feedback, leading to the development of the training modules and educational tools. This collaborative effort successfully engaged diverse audiences, ensuring the sustainability of the CCAAP by centering community voices and promoting environmental justice. To reduce print costs and ease the distribution of information, PHSKC later developed an online version. The material was also translated into other languages. The print version
